YCN Feel Good - Crit 2

Using what we have found so far, we produced our concept board ready for the crit.

We have decided that the best solution to the brief that we have produced is to rebrand them, making them more distinct to help them stand out and 'become famous'. We believe by having more consistency within everything they do that this will really help the brand to push themselves further. Also, to support the rebrand, we believe that a large scale advertising campaign would help to get the word out. This could be used across a variety of different methods to spread the word.

The feedback we received from this crit is

Our plan of action now following this crit is that we will begin with rebranding Feel Good - so new logo, a new (and better) bottle shape and new bottle labels. We're going to work through everything that we have proposed to do in order or priority, so we can't do the advertising campaign before the redesign for example. That way we will be most likely to answer the brief as effectively as possible.

The fact that we don't necessarily need to produce everything and can just propose them will help save us a bit of time and should mean that we can get everything done that we would like to.

YCN Feel Good - Initial Ideas

We have decided to come up with some individual initial ideas for the possibility of how we could take this brief, using what we have already found. I sketched mine down in my layout pad.

ideas sheets

The images basically speak for themselves of what the idea is. I kept the drawings simple for now.

We have both come up with some really good ideas, and have actually come up with quite a few similar ones which is good as this shows that we are on the same wavelength with it.

YCN Feel Good - Crit 29/02/12

Before the crit, we had to get our heads together to discuss what we have come up with and found, and identify exactly what it is we're going to do and put together a concept statement, ready to pitch to others in the crit group.

The main thing that we would like to achieve with this project is that we want to make people smile. So we thought about different things that make us smile.

This is the concept statement that we came up with and presented to others.

This is the feedback we received.

We explained to the group how the main problem we found with the company is their lack of brand awareness, and how they don't really stand out and actually just mimic other similar companies, as though they are trying to be a bit too much of everything.

From the crit we have many options to take the brief. We have decided to go down their 'make us famous route' on the brief, and will look at ways to possibly help them stand out more.

The audience that they have given on the brief is pretty big ranging from 16 - 34 year olds, so we have decided to narrow this down a bit to 22 - 28 year olds to work with.

For the next crit, we need 5 concept boards.

YCN Feel Good - Brief

Following the initial research conducted, along with the research workshop that we did, we were asked to write up briefs individually which we would then combine together in the next workshop session.

YCN Feel Good - Initial Research

YCN - Collaboration

With this brief being a collaborative one, we had to go through a process of finding our ideal partners to work with. For this we had to produce 2 A3 posters, one listing 5 things I have to offer and the other listing 5 things I am looking for in a partner.

5 skills I have
  • type/layout
  • ideas development
  • design for print interest
  • conscientious
  • eye for detail/accuracy

5 skills I need
  • organised
  • design for print interest
  • image/illustration
  • good at research
  • ideas development

Following this process, the partner that I've ended up working with is Beth Yates - I couldn't be any happier. Although we're friends we haven't really worked together before and we have different skill sets, so I think combining these would work really well. Also, she is on the same wavelength as me in terms of wanting to push the brief we do as far as we can, so bring it on.

We narrowed down the briefs that we had selected to the M&S one and the Feel Good one. We liked them both for similar reasons and couldn't really decide which to go with. In the end our gut feelings were more towards the Feel Good brief, which we decided to go with.

We made notes and what not on a printed copy of it to really deconstruct it to find out what it is that they are actually asking for.

We already have some great initial ideas that we're thinking about. We have compiled a list of research which we will do in preparation for the concept crit.

YCN - Briefs

Over reading week we were set the task to take a look at the briefs that are available on the YCN website for students to enter and choose 3 that we like and 1 that we dislike.

The ones that I chose are:

M&S
I like the sound of this one because the outcomes that it is looking for is pretty open ended and you can basically decide yourself what to do. It seems like a pretty light hearted brief, which really appeals to me as it wouldn't have an outcome that is serious. The fact that it doesn't have strict guidelines as to what they are looking for is something that I really like about this brief.

Feel Good
Again like the M& S brief, this one feels pretty light hearted and isn't something that would need to be so serious. They actually state within the brief that they want fun entries. This one is a little more focused with their requirements as they have given a specific target audience to work to.

Industry Trust
This one caught my attention because I think the outcomes for this could be quite inventive. Because pirate copies of films and what not aren't perfect qualities I think it would be interesting to take a print approach to this and try and capture the same sort of angle with that.
