100... - Book Making Induction

In the book making induction they showed us some basic ways to bind books.

As well as the induction, we had a studio task with Fred to understand more about how a book is printed, like to make sure it goes in order and what not.

Basic units of a book are:

  • leaves - individual sheets
  • pages - each side of a leaf
  • page spreads - bound together/spreads
Each side of the spreads are called
  • left - recto
  • right - verso
Imposition - precise arrangement of multiple pages

Book design book - recommended Data Flow book

We did a task where we were to fold a piece of paper a number of times in a certain order, and then in the bottom corner of each of the folds (whilst still folded) numbered each from 1 to how ever many there is. Then we folded the sheet of paper back out which revealed where each page would go on a huge design sheet that would go to a printer. It is vital to get them the same as this, and in the right position also so that when it is folded and put together to be the book, it will follow on as intended.
