What If... - Groups/Forums and Interactive Posters.

To get responses online, we set up a Facebook group for people who live in Leeds/used to, to join and add suggestions to.
Click here to go to it.

We also set us a couple of Discussion Threads on the main 2 Leeds forum websites. We manages to get a few responses on one as well.

We set ourselves a little task to go away and come up with our own mock ups to possibly use for the designs for our project. I decided to keep mine simple and to the point. I didn't want to over complicate the designs to then distract the viewer from what they should be thinking about. So also because of this I kept them in a black and white colour scheme (also because it would then make them cheaper to print out a variety of versions. I had a go at designing the interactive poster, as well as a post card, little business card type things leading people to the Facebook group we made, and a questionnaire that each of us could keep to hand to ask people we see what their suggestions would be.

During our next studio session we had, we decided to use Will's initial designs for the poster, and we each had our say on what should be done with it to make it work better. We went and got this printed out a number of times at A3 size, and the group walked down to the Boar Lane area to put them up, as well as collect some more primary research. While we were there we ended up on the street called The Calls, and this is where we stuck our posters and conducted the research.

These were down the backstreet, at the back of The Calls.

The feedback we got on the posters whilst we were there. We found that as people were walking past people were looking at the posters but not really stopping to interact with them, so Will kindly spoke to people as they walked past and explained to them what we were doing, which got more people to give suggestions.

We got a variety of responses on the posters. Some idea's quite innovative and some not so. They are:
   - swimming baths
   - studio apartments
   - artists studios
   - temporary accommodation for the homeless
   - John Lewis
   - offices
   - cheap affordable homes
   - just knock it down
   - school
   - preserve for the future
   - coffee shop - costa/starbucks

As well as putting the posters up in this area, we also conducted some more Primary Quantitative research.

During the time period from 12.15pm until 12.45pm, we counted the number of people that walked past on The Calls. We tallied them in categories of age groups such as 18-29, 30-50, and 50+.

The number of men that walked by were:
18 - 29 = 51 men.
30 - 50 = 28 men.
50 +     = 21 men.
This adds up to a total of 100 men.

The number of women that walked by were:
18 - 29 = 30 women.
30 - 50 = 21 women.
50 +     = 12 women.
This adds up to a total of 62 women.

Me and Beth started from one side of the street and walked to the other adding up the total number of buildings occupied, and the total not occupied along it.
Buildings occupied        = 13
Buildings not occupied  = 9

Between the times of 12:30pm and 12:40pm, Beth also counted the number of cars that drove by us because they are also people who would see the street and the condition it is in.
Numbers of cars that drove by = 48

Whilst Will was asking people for feedback, one guy gave an interesting answer, which was:
"Preserve the building for the future, if a school or something else is needed then the structure is already there. It's horrible to look at but if it was refurbished it would be better."
